Riverdale is a thriving residential neighbourhood located just east of the Don River Valley and downtown core. Encompassing North and South Riverdale (also known as Riverside), Riverdale is bounded by the Don River Valley to the west, Danforth Avenue to the north, Leslieville to the east, and Lake Shore Boulevard to the south.
Riverdale features numerous Victorian and Edwardian style homes constructed during the 1800’s as boarding rooms for the working class. Now renovated and converted to single-family dwellings, Riverdale boasts leafy tree-lined streets and is singularly placed to enjoy outdoor recreation at a number of the city’s finest parks. The 18-hectare Riverdale Park spans the lower Don River and offers access to everything from bike trails, to ravine paths, sports fields, to dog parks. Winter sees this park as one of the best tobogganing spots in the city, and year round offers the best views of Downtown to be found so close to the city.
With excellent access to public transit Riverdale offers a calmer respite from city life with easy access to all the shopping, recreation and culinary possibilities that it and neighbouring areas have to offer. Riverdale features Chinatown East at Broadview and Gerrard, replete with grocery vendors and a variety of eating establishments, from Chinese dumplings to Vietnamese food. Friends of the Lower Don, a local conservation group, help residents to preserve and protect the Don River with bike rides, walks and waterway cleanups.
